The Best Albums of 2026
Vote the membership before you argue the order: what gets on the page matters more here than where it sits. Three rules decide that. An album has to have first come out in 2026 as an original studio record, which cuts reissues, live albums, remix sets and expanded editions of older releases. It has to have left a trace: named on at least three of the mid-year best-of-2026 lists Album of the Year indexes, or carrying a critic score there built from twelve reviews or more. And one album per artist, so where an act put out two in 2026 the one on more of those lists stays, or the one with more reviews if that ties. The bands are deliberately coarse. Top is seven or more appearances, or under three appearances with twenty-five reviews or more. Middle is three to six. Bottom is under three appearances with twelve to twenty-four reviews. The vote does the ordering inside each. New records join by clearing all three rules, so this keeps moving.

Robyn — Sexistential (2026)
Eleven of the indexed mid-year lists carried Sexistential. Robyn put it out in March through Konichiwa and Young: nine songs, one of them called Dopamine, which is about as on the nose as she gets. Album of the Year puts the critic score at 83, off twenty-eight reviews.

underscores — U (2026)
One letter for a title, nine tracks, and an opener called Tell Me (U Want It). Eleven mid-year lists named it. Its critic score on Album of the Year is 88, though that rests on ten reviews, so the number is high and thin. Mom+Pop released it in March.

Phoebe Bridgers — Lost Weekend (2026)
Dead Oceans released this on 14 August, weeks after the mid-year lists were finished, so none of them names it. Thirty-two reviews are what get it in, behind a 91 that Album of the Year has at number one for 2026. Sixteen tracks, The Governor's Waltz among them, and a reprise of the title song to close.

Mitski — Nothing's About to Happen to Me (2026)
Ten mid-year lists took Nothing's About to Happen to Me. Mitski went to Dead Oceans in February with eleven songs and a title that reads like a shrug; Charon's Obol is where the country and folk edges show through. The critic aggregate on Album of the Year is 85, from thirty reviews.

Aldous Harding — Train on the Island (2026)
Ten lists picked up Train on the Island, which is a lot for a record this quiet. Album of the Year puts it at 83 across twenty reviews. 4AD and Flying Nun put out the ten songs in May, with Venus in the Zinnia sitting near the middle.

Slayyyter — WOR$T GIRL IN AMERICA (2026)
Fourteen tracks of pop that spends most of its time sneering, closing on BRITTANY MURPHY. with the full stop left in. Stereogum's mid-year list starts with it, and eight lists carried it altogether. The critic side is thinner: 79 on Album of the Year, off nine reviews.

Ratboys — Singin' to an Empty Chair (2026)
New West put this out in February. It ends on At Peace in the Hundred Acre Wood, a long title for a band who mostly write short songs, and nine mid-year lists took it, Consequence placing it second. Album of the Year has the aggregate at 83, off sixteen reviews.

My New Band Believe — My New Band Believe (2026)
Self-titled band, self-titled album, eight songs, Rough Trade, April. Heart of Darkness is the track that gets quoted back. Nine of the mid-year lists named it, and Album of the Year's aggregate is 84 on seventeen reviews. Not bad for a record whose own name makes it unsearchable.

Kacey Musgraves — Middle of Nowhere (2026)
Country record on Lost Highway, thirteen tracks, guests scattered through it. Uncertain, TX (feat. Willie Nelson) takes its name from a real town in east Texas. Eight mid-year lists carried it. Twenty-four critics filed on it, and Album of the Year settles the score at 80.

Jill Scott — To Whom This May Concern (2026)
Nineteen tracks out in February through Blues Babe and Human Re Sources, with a guest list running from Tierra Whack to Too $hort. Ode to Nikki (feat. Ab-Soul) sits late in the run. Seven lists named it at mid-year, which is what qualifies it, since Album of the Year's 79 is built on eleven reviews.

Mandy, Indiana — URGH (2026)
Sacred Bones, February, ten tracks, one of them titled ist halt so. Life Hex is the song that stays legible on a first pass. Seven of the indexed lists took it, and twenty-three reviews put it at 84 on Album of the Year, a warm reception for something this abrasive.

hemlocke springs — the apple tree under the sea (2026)
AWAL released ten songs in February, all lower case, one of them called head, shoulders, knees and ankles. Seven mid-year lists named it, against an Album of the Year score of 80 drawn from nine reviews. The list count is the sturdier of the two numbers.

June release on Geffen, thirteen tracks, a title long enough to pass for a lyric. maggots for brains is where she stops writing for radio. Six mid-year lists took it, and thirty-two critics reviewed it for an 85 on Album of the Year.

RAYE — THIS MUSIC MAY CONTAIN HOPE. (2026)
Seventeen tracks, most punctuated like sentences, out in March on Human Re Sources. Click Clack Symphony. (feat. Hans Zimmer) arrives sixth, and Al Green turns up further down the running order. It made six mid-year lists, and its 83 on Album of the Year rests on twenty-three reviews.

Neurosis — An Undying Love for a Burning World (2026)
Eight songs on Neurot in March, and Consequence made this its number one. Six lists in all took it at mid-year. The 89 on Album of the Year comes off nine reviews, and a score that high on a sample that small is not a consensus. Seething and Scattered runs closest to the shape the band is known for.

Converge — Love Is Not Enough (2026)
Converge released two albums in 2026. This one made four mid-year lists and Hum of Hurt made one, so this is the one that stays. Epitaph and Deathwish put it out in February; Amon Amok is the track that gets played loudest. An 87 on Album of the Year, from thirteen reviews.

Isaiah Rashad — IT'S BEEN AWFUL (2026)
Top Dawg and Warner released it on 1 May, sixteen tracks, titles in capitals throughout. SCARED 2 LOOK DOWN sits early and sets the temperature. Five mid-year lists picked it up, against a 75 on Album of the Year drawn from ten reviews. The lists liked this one more than the critics did.

Boards of Canada — Inferno (2026)
Warp, May, eighteen tracks, and titles like Prophecy At 1420 MHz that read as if they came off a chart of the sky. Four mid-year lists carried it, and twenty-five reviews sit behind its 82 on Album of the Year.

Fifteen songs on Brainfeeder in April, one of them called Anakin Learns His Fate, which tells you the jokes are still in. Four mid-year lists took it, SPIN and Treble among them. Thirteen reviews, and the Album of the Year score is 76.

Paul McCartney — The Boys of Dungeon Lane (2026)
Capitol and MPL put out fourteen songs in May. Salesman Saint is the one that sounds least like a man reaching back for an old trick. It made four of the mid-year lists. Twenty-six critics reviewed it, for an 81 on Album of the Year.

Ella Langley — Dandelion (2026)
Eighteen tracks that open and close with a version of Froggy Went A Courtin', out in April on Columbia and SAWGOD. Bottom Of Your Boots is the one built for a bar. Three mid-year lists named it. Album of the Year has it at 78, off seven reviews.

BTS — ARIRANG (2026)
Big Hit released fourteen songs in March, and Merry Go Round sits in the middle of the run. It turns up on three mid-year lists. Eleven critics filed, for a 74 on Album of the Year. That is a thin footprint for a group this size, so the list count is what admits it.

Interpol — This Mirror Weighs a Ton (2026)
Partisan released it on 28 August, far too late for any mid-year list to reach it, so zero lists carry it. Nineteen reviews back the 81 on Album of the Year. Twelve tracks, and So Rides the Reindeer is the oddest title Interpol have put on a record.

Mastodon — Marrow Deep (2026)
Loma Vista, 28 August, twelve tracks, and Snakes for Dinner is the one to start with. Zero mid-year lists reached it, since it came out after all of them were written, and fourteen reviews carry it in at 78 on Album of the Year.

Alabama Shakes — I Must Be Dreaming (2026)
Island put this out on 28 August, eleven songs, and I Feel Hope Coming is where the band sounds least careful. None of the mid-year lists names it either. Album of the Year has thirteen reviews behind a 78, and that is the whole case for it.
