The Best Pop Albums of 2026
Pop in 2026 keeps getting credit for records that belong to other genres, and the vote decides which albums are its own. An album qualifies if it is an original studio record first released in 2026, not an EP, a live set, a reissue or soundtrack; if it is built around a lead voice or a vocal group over produced instrumentation; one per artist; and if Album of the Year shows a critic score from nine reviews or more. Most of what that second clause removes is bands. Rapping, country, R&B, folk and rock go out on sound, not tags. Charli xcx's Wuthering Heights fails clause one, filed as a soundtrack. Two coarse tiers follow. The upper one takes albums whose score there is built from twenty reviews or more. Everything else qualifying goes in the lower tier. The nine and the twenty are both read off each album's own page there, never off a genre view. The vote orders both.

Geffen put out thirteen songs on 12 June, and Robert Smith sings on what's wrong with me. cigarette smoke closes it at five minutes forty, the longest track on it and the one nobody was going to put on the radio. Album of the Year's 85 comes off thirty-two reviews.

RAYE — THIS MUSIC MAY CONTAIN HOPE. (2026)
Four acts, one per season, an hour and thirteen minutes long, out on Human Re Sources on 27 March. WHERE IS MY HUSBAND! opens the summer act in capitals with an exclamation mark, which is not how the rest of the sequence behaves. Hans Zimmer and Al Green both turn up as credited guests. Twenty-three critics have filed. Album of the Year ends up at 83.

Robyn — Sexistential (2026)
Twenty-nine minutes, start to finish, on Konichiwa and Young. Sucker For Love arrives fourth and welds a heartbreak lyric to a floor filler. The title track is the shortest thing here, two minutes twenty, and it sounds the least like 2026. Stereogum's mid-year fifty ranked it sixteenth. Twenty-eight reviews back the 83 at Album of the Year.

Madonna — CONFESSIONS II (2026)
The title answers a 2005 record, and Warner released this one on 3 July: sixteen songs, an hour and three minutes. Album of the Year builds the 77 out of twenty-five reviews, which puts it in the upper tier. Danceteria sits fifth, and Sabrina Carpenter, Stromae, Feid and Martin Garrix are all credited elsewhere on it.

Harry Styles — Kiss All The Time. Disco, Occasionally. (2026)
Twelve songs, forty-two minutes and thirty-nine seconds, out on 6 March through Columbia. Season 2 Weight Loss is the seventh of them, and the title is the whole joke. One Wikipedia article prints the album title without its closing full stop; Spotify keeps it and so does Album of the Year. Thirty critics filed there, for a 73.

Arlo Parks — Ambiguous Desire (2026)
Transgressive released twelve tracks on 3 April, just under forty minutes, with Sampha singing on Senses. Blue Disco is the opener and runs three minutes flat. Twenty-one reviews sit behind the 77 on Album of the Year, which clears the upper tier's line by a single review.

Jessie Ware — Superbloom (2026)
EMI and Universal UK put out thirteen tracks on 17 April, two of them under a minute: a forty-eight second prelude and an interlude called Chariots of Love that runs twenty-seven seconds. Mon Amour closes the record. Album of the Year draws the 75 from twenty reviews, the minimum the upper tier takes.

underscores — U (2026)
Nine songs, thirty-four minutes, licensed from Corporate Rockmusic to Mom+Pop and dated 20 March. Hollywood Forever is the third of them. Seventh on Stereogum's half-year list, and the label credit is stranger than the music. Album of the Year gets to an 88 off ten reviews: a high number on a small count, so it lands in the lower tier.

Slayyyter — WOR$T GIRL IN AMERICA (2026)
Fourteen songs, forty-two minutes, out on 27 March. WHAT IS IT LIKE, TO BE LIKED? is twelfth of them, question mark included. Album of the Year's page lists 79 off nine reviews, while Wikipedia's article reports that the album "received an average score of 85, based on six reviews" at Metacritic. Six critics against nine, six points apart, and nothing to settle it with.

Holly Humberstone — Cruel World (2026)
Polydor, 10 April, twelve tracks that begin on a forty-five second scrap called So It Starts… and end on Beauty Pageant. Two of the songs in between are titled Drunk Dialling and Red Chevy, which is the register she is working in. The 78 that Album of the Year prints comes from seventeen reviews, three short of the upper tier.

hemlocke springs — the apple tree under the sea (2026)
Ten tracks on AWAL, dated 13 February, running thirty-three minutes. A pair of them are called sense is (prelude) and sense (is), which tells you how she names things, and be the girl! ends the record. Stereogum ranked it twenty-ninth of fifty. The 80 on its Album of the Year page rests on nine reviews.

MUNA — Dancing On The Wall (2026)
Saddest Factory dated it 8 May: thirteen tracks, two of them under twenty seconds and used as scene changes. Buzzkiller closes it. Katie Gavin sings lead. Album of the Year totals fourteen reviews for a 72, and files the record synthpop, dance-pop and alt-pop.

Robbie Williams — BRITPOP (2026)
Sony UK and Farrell Music released eleven songs on 16 January, thirty-eight minutes. Morrissey is the eighth, and naming a song after him is about as subtle as naming the album BRITPOP. Spotify prints the opener as Rocket (feat. Tony Iommi), and one guest guitarist on one track does not make the other ten rock: what carries them is a pop singer over studio production. Fifteen reviews stand behind Album of the Year's 75.

BTS — ARIRANG (2026)
Hooligan is the second of fourteen songs on Big Hit and HYBE, dated 20 March, and the whole record is done in forty-one minutes. Album of the Year's tags run K-Pop, Pop Rap, Trap and Electropop, and it is a vocal group over production whichever of those you lead with. Eleven reviews make the 74 there, and they split: Pitchfork 53, Rolling Stone UK 100.
