The Best Hip-Hop Albums of 2026
Rap spends every December arguing where its own borders sit, and your vote decides which side this list lands on. The scope rule does the heavy work: a rapper has to be leading the record and rapping on it, sung hooks and melodic delivery included, and it has to be a 2026 album rather than an EP, a mixtape or a repackage. Genre tags do not settle it. Album of the Year files Kim Gordon's PLAY ME under hip-hop with 27 reviews behind it, more than any rap record there. Cut anyway: Gordon is not rapping. Slayr's Half Blood (BloodLuxe) goes too, twenty-one tracks that are a November 2025 album plus a separate March 2026 project, though Complex and HotNewHipHop list it. Ordering runs in two tiers. Above sit the albums at least three of six mid-year lists carried, from five outlets, Complex having run two. Everything else sits below, there because one corner of the field backed it hard: a double-figure review count at Album of the Year, or the top of HotNewHipHop's mid-year rap ranking.

Baby Keem — Ca$ino (2026)
Eleven tracks and thirty-seven minutes, which for a pgLang release counts as restraint. No Security opens with Keem switching cadence mid-bar until the beat sounds like it is chasing him, and Kendrick Lamar turns up later on Good Flirts. Complex placed it fourth across all genres in June, and five of the six mid-year lists behind this ranking carried it.

Isaiah Rashad — IT'S BEEN AWFUL (2026)
Top Dawg put this out at the start of May, sixteen tracks, and the title is doing a lot of work. BOY IN RED sets SZA on the hook while Rashad sounds worn down underneath her. HotNewHipHop had it eighth in July; Complex, Shatter the Standards and XS Noize all listed it, Complex on both of its mid-year lists.

Earl Sweatshirt, MIKE & SURF GANG — POMPEII // UTILITY (2026)
Thirty-three songs credited on Spotify to Earl alone, with MIKE surfacing on Leadbelly and Surf Gang in the copyright line, a strange way to file a three-way record. Shatter the Standards, XS Noize and both Complex lists carried it, and HotNewHipHop had it third in July. Shutter Island has Earl talking himself into a corner over a loop that keeps folding back on itself.

A$AP Rocky — Don't Be Dumb (2026)
Seventeen tracks with a guest list running from Doechii to Jessica Pratt, a strange room to build, and Rocky builds it anyway. It reached every mid-year list here except Stereogum's, ninth at HotNewHipHop and fourteenth across all genres at Complex. PUNK ROCKY and FISH N STEAK sit at either end of the spread, the second roping in Tyler, The Creator.

J. Cole — The Fall-Off (2026)
Nine critics reviewed it and finished forty points apart: Clash 90, Slant 50, Pitchfork 53, Metacritic's weighted average 67. It moved 280,000 album-equivalent units in week one. The Villest (with Erykah Badu) is where that argument gets loudest. Four mid-year lists had it, and on the two ranked ones it came second at HotNewHipHop and third at Complex.

Vince Staples — Cry Baby (2026)
Ten songs and thirty-five minutes on Loma Vista, about as lean as Staples gets. The Big Bad Wolf runs the fairy tale conceit the title sets up and never explains it. Both of Complex's mid-year lists carried it, twenty-fourth across all genres, and HotNewHipHop had it seventh in July. Album of the Year lists it at 82 from sixteen reviews.

By Storm — My Ghosts Go Ghost (2026)
By Storm are a hip-hop duo, rapper Nathaniel Ritchie and producer Parker Corey, who spent a decade in Injury Reserve before this. Best Interest brings in billy woods. Nine tracks and forty-six minutes, out at the end of January. Album of the Year puts it at 81 from nine, and three of the six mid-year lists carried it.

Roc Marciano — 656 (2026)
Self-released on Pimpire and Marci Enterprises, twelve tracks, thirty-two minutes. Yves St. Moron gives the joke away, because the record is designer-brand contempt delivered at a murmur. It turns up on Complex's rap round-up, on Shatter the Standards and on XS Noize, and not one of those three publishes in rank order.

Navy Blue — Sir Render (2026)
Fifteen tracks on Freedom Sounds, with Ka on Circa and Armand Hammer on Residuum. Crux Ansata is where the production drops back far enough to hear him breathe between lines. Complex's rap round-up and XS Noize both took it, and HotNewHipHop put it twelfth in July.

Samara Cyn — Detour (2026)
Seven tracks and nineteen minutes on VANTA Music, released and filed as an album. BUSHWICK is the one that travels, clipped syllables over a beat that will not resolve. Complex ranked it twelfth across all genres in June and HotNewHipHop twenty-first in July, three mid-year placements in all.

Don Toliver — OCTANE (2026)
Eighteen tracks on Cactus Jack and Atlantic, and Toliver leans melodic, Tiramisu included. Complex ran it on both mid-year lists, second across all genres in June. HotNewHipHop then ranked it fifth on a rap-only list in July, which is a rap publication answering the genre question directly.

Drake — ICEMAN (2026)
Sold 463,000 album-equivalent units in its first week and sits at 51 on Metacritic from twelve critic reviews, three of them positive. Eighteen tracks with 21 Savage and Future among the guests, and What Did I Miss? in the middle of the run. Both Complex lists took it, first across all genres, and HotNewHipHop had it fourth.

Sideshow — TIGRAY FUNK (2026)
HotNewHipHop put this top of its mid-year rap ranking in July. Album of the Year carries it at 84 from a single review, and that one review is Pitchfork's, so the score and the endorsement rest on one critic rather than a field. Thirty-two tracks, out in February on the same 10k imprint as POMPEII // UTILITY, and BLAME BURNAYS is the one to start with.

Genesis Owusu — REDSTAR WU & THE WORLDWIDE SCOURGE (2026)
Metacritic's summary calls Genesis Owusu a Ghanaian Australian rapper and scores the record 88 from ten reviews, and Album of the Year counts ten as well. DEATH CULT ZOMBIE is where the punk end takes over completely, the sort of thing a genre tag cannot settle and a delivery can. Fourteen tracks, Duckwrth and Ladyhawke among the guests, and a single mid-year list found room for it.

KNEECAP — FENIAN (2026)
Belfast trio rapping in a mixture of English and Irish, which is the record's argument as much as its method. Irish Goodbye (feat. Kae Tempest) closes it. Fourteen tracks on Heavenly, out in May, and Shatter the Standards was the only mid-year list to take it. Album of the Year has it at 81 from twenty-three reviews, second only to Kim Gordon on that page.
