The Best R&B Albums of 2026
Mid-year lists picked some R&B albums of 2026, critics reviewed others the lists passed over or were too early for, and you rank both. One new 2026 studio album per artist qualifies when its Wikipedia article, a review Album of the Year lists or a mid-year entry calls the record or its maker R&B, neo-soul, soul or funk. Out, on those sources: a lead called only a rapper (Hip-Hop's line), an act called a rock band (Indie & Alternative's) and a lead placed in a jazz scene. A record the site's 2026 Pop or Hip-Hop list seats keeps that seat, RAYE's included. Then three or more of nineteen mid-year lists, counted per masthead, or ten reviews behind Album of the Year's score. No list could pick an unreleased album, so entries count only later lists and name that denominator. Four lists or fifteen reviews make the upper tier, the rest the lower; the gate settles membership, the vote the order. Spotify often back-dates reissues, so each link is its earliest carrier by track count and song titles, not year.

Warp released twelve songs on 10 July with point blank second and A.K. Paul, Fousheé and PinkPantheress guesting further along. Pitchfork's line on it is "Weaving psych rock and shoegaze textures into her mellifluous R&B ethos." By 23 September fifteen critics had filed with Album of the Year, and Clash, printed 3 August and the one list known to postdate the record, named it, one out of three at most given two undatable lists.

GENA — The Pleasure Is Yours (2026)
Treble hears the drums set the stage "before a single note is deliciously sung by Liv.e", though Paste's list called it "a picture-perfect rap album". Lex put out sixteen tracks on 27 February, Lead It Up the tenth, and Paste and Stereogum both placed it thirty-third. Clash, Treble and the Substack Shatter the Standards bring that to five of nineteen lists, all printed later, while Album of the Year's review tally stood at five on 23 September.

Jill Scott — To Whom This May Concern (2026)
Her first album in more than a decade arrived on 13 February, and Beautiful People is third, straight after Trombone Shorty's turn on Be Great. Consequence ranked it twelfth and wrote that she sounds "more uninhibited than we've ever heard her before". Every masthead of the nineteen postdates it and nine carried the record, with eleven reviews behind it on Album of the Year's page, read 23 September.

Thundercat — Distracted (2026)
Treble's case for it: "Distracted shows Thundercat's songcraft can hang with R&B and soul styling that stretches back decades." His voice rides his own bass, Tame Impala join him on No More Lies, the second song, and A$AP Rocky on Funny Friends. Six of nineteen lists took it, Clash's and Shatter the Standards' among them, each published after its 3 April release, and the critics' count reached thirteen by 23 September.

James Blake — Trying Times (2026)
His first self-released album, thirteen songs on Good Boy Records dated 13 March, has Trying Times, the title song, in fourth place, with Monica Martin and Dave the credited guests. The Guardian's review picked out samples of Dusty Springfield and Dizzee Rascal on what it called his seventh record. Billboard, Exclaim! and Variety named it, no fewer than three of nineteen, and nineteen reviews logged by Album of the Year up to 23 September lift it into the upper tier.

Kehlani — Kehlani (2026)
Atlantic released seventeen tracks on 24 April, a fifth album carrying her own name, with Brandy, Missy Elliott, USHER and Clipse among the guests and Unlearn closing it at four minutes seventeen. Complex's all-genre twenty-five had it ninth in June and Variety's roundup took it too, two of the five lists among nineteen that named it, each printed after it, and five critics had weighed in via Album of the Year when it was read on 23 September.

Elmiene — sounds for someone (2026)
A debut, twelve songs on Polydor and Def Jam from 27 March, with Raphael Saadiq on Light By The Window and Told You I'll Make It at the end. NME gave it full marks and put it on its mid-year list, and Complex slotted it eighth, two of the four lists out of nineteen that carried it, each later than the record, against three reviews, the sum Album of the Year showed as of 23 September.

Brent Faiyaz — Icon (2026)
Ten songs, every title in lower case with a full stop, out 13 February through ISO Supremacy and UnitedMasters, and a twelve-track Director's Cut followed three days later with two bonus songs, and the link is the ten. Complex ranked it seventh in June and Variety took it too, so four of nineteen lists carried it, all postdating it, where two reviews made up Album of the Year's whole count on 23 September; start with the second song, wrong faces.

Ariana Grande — petal (2026)
Republic and Babydoll put out twelve songs on 31 July, with the title song, petal, third. Grande leads, singing, and The Irish Times calls her eighth album "an R'n'B Enya". Clash, printed 3 August, is the one dated list later than it and passed, as did the two lists without a date, zero of three at most, but twenty reviews within Album of the Year's tally as of 23 September seat it in the upper tier.

Jalen Ngonda — Doctrine of Love (2026)
Daptone put out ten songs in thirty minutes on 5 June, Hannah, What's the Matter? seventh among them, and The Skinny's review hears "Smokey Robinson over 70s Marvin Gaye drum grooves" in it. Six of the nineteen lists were already out before it, which leaves thirteen, and Clash is the one of those that named it, so the dozen critics Album of the Year listed by 23 September are what carry it in.

Steve Lacy — Oh yeah? (2026)
RCA and L-M released ten tracks on 17 July, the feeling third, and he sings solo over psychedelic soul and neo-soul, SZA and Erykah Badu guesting. Album of the Year marks the closer, bebe, as a bonus; Spotify prints it plain. Clash's 3 August list named it, and Billboard's and Rolling Stone's, whose dates could not be read, are the only others that might have, one of at most three; eleven critics had reviewed it there by 23 September.

Dua Saleh — Of Earth & Wires (2026)
Ghostly International released eleven songs in twenty-six minutes on 15 May, with Bon Iver singing on three. Beats Per Minute places Saleh "at the bleeding edge of alternative R&B and electronic music" and hears Firestorm, the fifth track, lean "heavily into an earthy, funky R&B groove". Consequence ranked it eighth, and FLOOD and NME named it too, three of nineteen, each dated after it, with seven critics counted by 23 September.

Ravyn Lenae — Blue Island (2026)
Fourteen songs on Atlantic, dated 7 August and opening with Handle, reunite her with the producer Dahi for what Pitchfork calls "velvety, '80s-inspired pop, rock, and R&B". It arrived after all seventeen dated mid-year lists, and neither of the two that could not be dated, Billboard's or Rolling Stone's, named it, so its list count reads zero with two the ceiling, and twelve reviews there by 23 September bring it in.

Bruno Mars — The Romantic (2026)
Nine songs lasting thirty-one minutes from Atlantic, 27 February, which AllMusic called "a well-dressed set of nine finely crafted love songs", with Risk It All the opener. The Guardian gave it 40 and AllMusic 80, two of twelve logged at Album of the Year by 23 September, and at mid-year Billboard, Shatter the Standards and Soul in Stereo made it three of nineteen, every one postdating the album.

Lizzo — BITCH (2026)
Lizzo's twelve songs came out on 5 June through Atlantic and Nice Life with Goodmorning! last, and Wikipedia's article, which credits her with vocals on every track, calls the record "primarily a pop, hip-hop and R&B album". Of the thirteen lists printed after 5 June, none took it, zero of thirteen; Album of the Year instead logged eleven reviews by 23 September, The Guardian's hearing "weak genre-hopping songs".

April + VISTA — Traditional Noise (2026)
April George sings and VISTA, the producer Matthew Thompson, builds the tracks, as FLOOD introduced the pair, calling her "a soulful chanteuse". Eleven songs on Third & Hayden from 22 April end on Morning Star, and Stereogum, ranking it forty-fifth, heard "bits of rock, R&B, electronic, hip-hop, and classical music"; FLOOD and the R&B-only Shatter the Standards also named it, three of nineteen, all of them postdating it, beside Album of the Year's single review on 23 September.

Jordan Ward — BACKWARD (2026)
Out on 30 January, National Backwards Day as FADER pointed out, with TAKE-OUT over in a minute thirty-eight. Spotify carries it as fifteen tracks, the last two being bonus songs per Album of the Year, so the link adds two to the thirteen. Complex ranked it tenth across genres in June, with FADER and Rolling Stone making three of nineteen lists, all after its release, while one review was everything Album of the Year held on 23 September.

Jai'Len Josey — Serial Romantic (2026)
Pitchfork calls it the Atlanta singer's debut, thirteen tracks on Def Jam from 24 April that close with I Believe (Selfish). Billboard's fifty was among the three of nineteen lists to name it, every one later than the album, and that is the route in, since a lone review made up the entire Album of the Year count on 23 September.

Jungle — Sunshine (2026)
Paste's review calls this "The London trio's fifth album": eleven songs on Caiola and AWAL from 14 August, their voices over boogie, smooth soul and nu-disco, the title song Sunshine second. It postdates each mid-year list that carries a date, and the pair left over, Billboard's and Rolling Stone's, neither of them datable, passed on it, none of at most two, so ten reviews from Album of the Year's critics on 23 September, the floor exactly, admit it.

FLO — THERAPY AT THE CLUB (2026)
A trio, sixteen tracks on Island and Republic from 7 August, with Therapy at the Club eighth. Pitchfork heard "Plush harmonies power glossy 2000s pop-R&B throwbacks" and AllMusic's review names TLC and Electrik Red, R&B's side of that era. Every dated list came first and neither undatable list carried it, so its masthead count is zero against a ceiling of two, and it sits on the ten-review line for Album of the Year on 23 September.
