    Godot Engine

Free and open source under the MIT license, with no royalty, no revenue threshold and no per-seat charge. You ship the game, you keep the money. Scripting runs on GDScript, C#, C++, or whatever you bring through GDExtension, and a project deploys to desktop, mobile and the web. Start in 2D, where the node-based scene system clicks faster than any rival engine's.

    Ardour

Here's the wrinkle nobody mentions. The license is the GNU General Public License version 2 or newer, so the source code costs nothing and you can build the program yourself. What the project charges for is the convenience of a ready-to-run build, and it says you can choose to pay as little as US$1 for that download. Records, edits and mixes on Linux, macOS and Windows.

    Shotcut

Video editing with no import step: the timeline reads hundreds of audio and video formats and codecs directly through FFmpeg, so mixed-format, mixed-resolution and mixed-frame-rate projects simply open. Resolution support goes to 4k, and screen, webcam and audio capture are built in. Free, open source, cross-platform. Plainer than the paid editors, which is exactly the point.

    darktable

Photographers who want Lightroom's shape without Adobe's rent land here. Digital negatives go into a database, you sort them on a zoomable lighttable, and editing is non-destructive all the way through the pipeline, so the original image is never modified. Released under GPL 3.0. Color management carries fidelity to print, and GPU accelerated processing is what you feel on a big export.

    FreeCAD

Parametric 3D modeling that reads and writes STEP, IGES, STL, SVG, DXF, OBJ, IFC and DAE, which is the part that decides whether you can use it, because your model leaves in a format a machine shop or a printer accepts. Open source, and its own site promises no sign-up, no paywall, no restrictions. Workbenches cover FEA, CAM and BIM. Give it a weekend before judging.

    MuseScore Studio

Notation software its own front page calls completely free, with no limitations, and open source besides. Scores travel to and from other programs via MusicXML and MIDI, so a part engraved here opens in whatever the rest of the ensemble runs. Watch the domain: musescore.org is the program you install, musescore.com is the paid score library, and conflating them is an easy mistake.

    Penpot

Design tooling you can run on your own servers is rare, and this is the one that leans into it: deployment agnostic, per its own words, so private cloud, on-premise or any environment you control. That means no vendor changes the plan underneath you. Files speak open standards, namely CSS, HTML, SVG and JSON, alongside its own open file format.

    LMMS

A hundred percent free, open source and community-driven, in its own words, and a sequencer that assumes you'd rather build patterns than mic up a band. Native multisample support covers SoundFont (SF2), Giga and Gravis UltraSound formats, with 64-bit VST instrument hosting and drop-in LADSPA effects. MIDI and Hydrogen files import. Bundled instruments mean noise on the first evening.

    RawTherapee

Released as Free Software under GPLv3, and built on a non-destructive 32-bit floating point processing engine with modern demosaicing algorithms and advanced color and detail editing. Where it beats the friendlier raw developers is control: the demosaicing choices are the reason to be here, and they tell on old sensors and awkward fine detail. Slower to learn than it looks, and worth the fight if you shoot difficult light.

    Blockbench

Low-poly and pixel-art modeling, and the site is blunt about terms: entirely free, for all users and for any purpose, open source under the GPL. Texturing happens inside the program instead of in a second app. Rigging then runs on position, rotation and scale keyframes, so a model gets animated where it was built. Mojang Studios and Hytale are listed among its users.

    Upscayl

Desktop AI upscaling, described by its makers as free and open source, with builds for Linux, macOS and Windows and a promise on the front page that you download once and it is forever yours. Several models ship for different kinds of image. One job, done properly. Keep it around for old scans and the low-resolution logo a client swears is the only copy.

    DaVinci Resolve

Ranked on its license rather than its power, because a free edition of a paid product is not free software. Blackmagic's own page describes a single tool combining editing, color correction, visual effects, motion graphics, audio post production and photo editing. Color work sits on the color page, audio on the Fairlight page. Studio costs US$295 and adds the Neural Engine.

    Photopea

Browser tab, no install, and full PSD support for both opening and saving, covering layers, masks, smart objects, the lot. Raw files open too: DNG, CR2, CR3, NEF, ARW and others. The privacy page is the persuasive bit, saying files you open are never sent anywhere and never leave your device, processed by your own hardware. Free to use, but a product rather than a project, which is why it sits down here.

    Figma

The pricing page states it plainly: always free for individuals. Then it states the shape of that, meaning three projects, two members, 30 days of version history. Fine for a portfolio piece, thin for a studio, and the day a third collaborator joins, the free plan stops covering you. Auto layout and prototyping are why people put up with the ceiling.

    Adobe Express

Priced at US$0.00 on its own pricing page, under the line "Free to use. No credit card required." What that buys: 5GB of storage, ten days of version history, access to the Adobe Fonts collection, and scheduling to one account per social network. Social graphics tool rather than a design tool, and rather good at being exactly that.
