The Best Pens and Pencils for People Who Love Paper
Pens and pencils, ranked by what it takes to keep them writing — vote the order into a shape you'd defend. Three blocks. Top: instruments fed from a bottle, where the page names a piston filler or a converter; a built-in filler outranks one you fit a converter to. Middle: the ones the maker sells a named refill or lead for. Bottom: nothing to put back, sharpened away or written dry. The lower two run alphabetically by maker; votes reorder inside all three. Membership is one test: the maker's own page must name the thing as something that makes a mark, and where no maker page could be located, the encyclopaedia article must. If the page names a notebook, a pad or a planner, it belongs on the journals-and-planners list next door. A pen boxed with a notebook, a case, a sharpener, a spare nib and the ink itself belong on neither — though a pencil sold only by the dozen is still one pencil. The blocks ignore line width, which every fountain pen here leaves to a checkout dropdown.
TWSBI Diamond 580 Clear Fountain Pen is #1 on “The Best Pens and Pencils for People Who Love Paper”.

TWSBI Diamond 580 Clear Fountain Pen
Piston fills straight from a bottle: twist the knob at the end and the clear barrel loads, so you can watch the level drop across a week of notes. The maker's pitch is that you can disassemble and reassemble it yourself, which is rare in a sealed filling system. Nib grade, Extra Fine through Stub 1.1, is a checkout choice and not a property of the page.

TWSBI ECO Black Fountain Pen
Same filling trick in a plainer body: unscrew the end cap, dip the nib in ink, screw the cap back. An inner cap inside the lid seals the nib when the pen is stored away, which decides whether it writes on Monday or has dried out by Thursday. The cap posts on the back, so nothing goes rolling off the desk while you write.

LAMY safari Fountain Pen
Bottled ink is the upgrade here, not the default. A LAMY T 10 cartridge comes in the box, and the Z 28 converter is listed as a recommended accessory bought separately. A window in the barrel shows the ink level, and the grip is moulded into flats that force one hold — the single most divisive thing about it. Colour and nib grade are both dropdowns.

Ballpoint Pen 849™ BLACK CODE
Swiss made, aluminium, and shaped in cross-section like a wooden pencil — six flats and a push button, so there is no cap to lose. Caran d'Ache names the refill on the page: a Goliath M black ink cartridge. That single line is why it sits in the middle block rather than the bottom one, because the body is built to outlive what is inside it.

Pentel EnerGel-X Retractable Liquid Gel Pen (0.5mm) Needle Tip
Width is on the page here, not in a dropdown: a 0.5mm needle tip, sold under SKU BLN105-A. Pentel calls the ink fast-drying and smudge-free for left-handed writers — the maker's claim, and worth testing with your own hand. Refillable with any EnerGel refill, so the barrel outlasts the ink in it and the pen you buy is the pen you keep.

Pilot G2
Check the domain before you dismiss it: Pilot Corporation of America publishes this page at powertothepen.com, which looks like a fan site and is not — the footer settles it. Point sizes run ultra-fine, extra-fine, fine and bold, so the one in your drawer may not be the one you remember. The barrel is refillable, which is the only reason it outranks the pencils.

rOtring 600
Full metal, hexagonal, knurled where your fingers land — a drafting instrument rather than a desk toy. The lead sleeve is fixed instead of retractable, which keeps the line in view and will eventually punch a hole through a shirt pocket. A hardness indicator on the barrel remembers which grade you loaded. Lead size, 0.5 or 0.7, is chosen at checkout.

SARASA Mark ON Gel Retractable
Built for people who highlight what they have just written: Zebra says the pigment ink 'doesn't run away when confronted with your favorite highlighter' and dries in five seconds. The point is 0.5 mm. Zebra's own refill listing carries a 'Sarasa Mark ON Black Ink Refill 0.5mm 2pk', which is what lifts a plastic gel pen above the pencils below it.

Bic Cristal
Mass-produced since 1950, and the ball has been tungsten carbide since 1961; the barrel's six flats copy a wooden pencil, which is where the shape came from. Since 1991 the polypropylene cap has had a small hole in it. MoMA holds the design in its permanent collection. Routed to Wikipedia — a gate-legal maker product page could not be located.

Blackwing 602 (Set of 12)
Twelve to a box — the product is the set, not the pencil — with graphite the maker describes as 'firm, smooth'. 'Half the Pressure, Twice the Speed' is printed down the barrel, which tells you what the formula is tuned for. The square ferrule takes a replaceable eraser, so the one part you can swap is the part that is not doing the writing.

Blackwing Pearl Pencils (Set of 12)
Sits between the other two grades by the maker's own account — 'softer than the graphite found in the Blackwing 602 but firmer than the graphite found in the Blackwing Matte' — which makes it the one to start with if you cannot pick. Finish is pearlescent white, pink or blue, chosen at checkout. Same square ferrule, same twelve to a box.

Castell 9000 graphite pencil, HB
Each hardness carries its own article number — 119000 is the HB — so the grade is bound to the URL, even though the page offers a picker that jumps to the rest. Faber-Castell credits a 'secural bonding process (SV)' for gluing lead to wood down the whole length, which is a claim about what survives a sharpener rather than what happens on paper. The page dates the design to 1905.

Pigma Micron
Archival pigment ink in a sealed barrel. Sakura states the ink 'will not bleed or run if liquids are spilled on or applied to the document after the ink has dried', and that it 'does not bleed through most papers' — which is why it turns up in sketchbooks and field journals. No refill is named on the page, so when the ink stops the pen is finished.
