    NHL '94 (1993)

Pass across the slot and the winger buries it without settling the puck first. The one-timer arrived with the 1993 release and it is still the shot most hockey games teach you first. Two buttons, and plenty of people who played every sequel since will tell you the sequels made it worse. Take Chicago, find Roenick.

    Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2 (2000)

Balance on two wheels between tricks and the run does not have to end. The manual shipped in 2000 and turned a scoring system into a language, so most combos after it are really chains of manuals wearing tricks. Skating games kept the idea. The two minute timer is the only thing about it that dates.

    NBA Jam (1993)

Two on two, no fouls, and a ball that catches fire after three in a row. The 1993 cabinet made basketball into showing off, and the arcade sports games that followed borrowed the register wholesale. Boomshakalaka is a word now. The announcer does more work than the players, and that was always the point.

    Punch-Out!! (1987)

Little Mac cannot win a slugging match, so the fight becomes reading: a shoulder twitch, an eye flash, a half second to counter. Mike Tyson stood at the end of that ladder in 1987 until his likeness deal lapsed and Nintendo renamed the game around him. Good boxing games still work this way and mostly admit it.

    SSX 3 (2003)

Ride from the summit to the bottom without a loading screen, which in 2003 was the whole argument. One mountain, three peaks, any line down you can find. Snowboarding games before this were a menu of separate tracks, and afterwards the better ones handed you terrain instead. The soundtrack is doing a lot of work too.

    Wii Sports (2006)

Nobody had to be taught this one. You swing the remote and the racquet swings, and in 2006 that put a controller in hands that had never held one. Motion control spread everywhere afterwards and mostly got worse. The case against is real: it came free with the console and not one of the five games inside it has much depth.

International Superstar Soccer Pro 98 (1998)

Konami's Tokyo studio added a one-two here in 1998, so the passer could keep running instead of standing still and waiting for the ball back. Small change, large consequence: football games stopped being only about whoever had possession. This line became Pro Evolution Soccer, and a good number of people still think the ancestor plays better than the descendants.

    Tecmo Super Bowl (1991)

Real teams, real schedule, and a season that carried statistics from the opening week to the playoffs. All of it arrived in 1991, on the back of an NFL licence the predecessor never had. What changed was the licence and the calendar, not the play itself. Bo Jackson is still broken, and no patch is coming.

    ESPN NFL 2K5 (2004)

Twenty dollars the day it shipped, against fifty for the market leader, which was a declaration of war and not a discount. The VIP profile learned how you actually played, then handed a model of you to your friends to beat. Clever, and none of it touches what happens between the whistles. Months later the rival bought the NFL licence outright and the series ended.

    Madden NFL 2004 (2003)

Owner mode arrived in 2003 and let you price hot dogs, build a stadium and relocate a team that had done nothing wrong. Michael Vick was unguardable, which nobody has forgotten. Everything new that year lives in the front office, never on the field: this is where the series became a business you run.

    NBA 2K11 (2010)

Jordan's ten best nights, recreated shot for shot, and the Challenge counts it only if you match the box score he actually put up. Miss and the game restarts. A history lesson bolted to the side of a basketball game, and in 2010 that was reason enough to buy it. People still install this one.

    Virtua Tennis (1999)

Between tournaments the 1999 circuit makes you clear training exercises, three difficulty levels apiece, and those are the part people describe from memory decades later. Drills, not matches. Everything added sits beside the tennis, never inside it. What is underneath is Sega at full strength, and it holds up.

    MLB The Show 21 (2021)

Build your own ballpark: wall height, foul territory, outfield dimensions, whatever nonsense you want. That was new to the series in 2021, and what it hands you is a construction kit, not a swing. The hitting engine is why people stay with this series at all, and it was already there.
