The Best Sports Documentaries Ever Made
A sports documentary is never really about sport. That is the argument these films are having. Vote them into whatever order you can defend. Tier one is the entries here that turned up in at least two of three published rankings read on 4 September 2026: Axios's fifty from 2020, Muscle and Health's hundred read to thirty, and Stacker's hundred read to twenty-five. Tier two is every other entry here. The tiers are the desk's; the order inside them is yours. The gate: nonfiction; the sport has to be physical and organised, something other people also compete in and keep records for, so a one-off nobody else can repeat is out; no subject twice; one finished story per entry. That fourth clause is why The Last Dance and O.J.: Made in America are here, while the open-ended strands 30 for 30, Hard Knocks and Welcome to Wrexham are not entries themselves; a film out of one enters under its own title. Reconstruction is allowed where the people it happened to narrate it. No IMDb entity, no place.
Hoop Dreams (1994) is #1 on “The Best Sports Documentaries Ever Made”.

Hoop Dreams (1994)
Steve James followed two Chicago teenagers for five years expecting a half-hour short and came back with three hours about tuition bills, long bus rides to a suburban school and a father's addiction. Basketball is the frame rather than the subject. Three columns out of three carried it, two of them at number one.

The Last Dance (2020)
Ten episodes built around footage a crew shot inside the 1997-98 Bulls and then locked away for two decades. Jordan sits with a tablet and answers his rivals in real time. It is his account of his own career, which is both the standard criticism and the reason the thing moves. Two of the three had it, one at number one.

Senna (2010)
Asif Kapadia built the whole thing out of archive: onboard laps, television feeds, drivers' briefings, not one talking head. The feud with Alain Prost runs through it, and so does the weekend at Imola in 1994 that ends it. All three ranked it, and none placed it outside their top seven.
https://www.imdb.com/title/tt1424432/ - 4
O.J.: Made in America (2016)
Nearly eight hours long, and the murders do not arrive until the middle. Ezra Edelman gives the first half to Los Angeles police history, to race, and to how a running back out of a housing project turned into a corporate face. When the Bronco reaches the 405 in 1994 it reads as consequence, not spectacle. Two of three columns include it.
https://www.imdb.com/title/tt5275892/ - 5
When We Were Kings (1996)
Leon Gast shot in Kinshasa in 1974 and then spent twenty-two years in rights disputes before anyone could see the result. Ali talks without stopping. Foreman leans on the ropes and waits. Zaire 74, the music festival that travelled with the fight, gets weight of its own. Carried by all three.
https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0118147/ - 6
Free Solo (2018)
Alex Honnold goes up three thousand feet of El Capitan with no rope, and the crew have to work out where to stand so he cannot catch them flinching. Jimmy Chin and Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi give that problem as much room as the climb. Present in every one of the three.
https://www.imdb.com/title/tt7775622/ - 7
Pumping Iron (1977)
Bodybuilding was a fringe hobby before this. Arnold Schwarzenegger works on Lou Ferrigno across a breakfast table in Pretoria, and the 1975 Mr Olympia gets decided somewhere in that conversation rather than on stage. Whether the needling was staged for the camera is still argued over. Two columns rank it, at twelve and at seventeen.
https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0076578/ - 8
Touching the Void (2003)
Two climbers sit in chairs and tell you what happened on Siula Grande in 1985 while actors re-stage it on the mountain. Simon Yates cut the rope. Joe Simpson crawled out of the crevasse and down the glacier over three days. The reconstruction never pretends to be footage. All three carried it.
https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0379557/ - 9
The Endless Summer (1966)
Two surfers chase summer round the world from 1963 with boards in canvas bags, and Bruce Brown narrated it live at screenings before his voice was ever put on the print. Cape St Francis in South Africa is the payoff, a right-hander nobody had ridden. Two columns list it, at nine and at twenty-seven.
https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0060371/ - 10
Diego Maradona (2019)
Five hundred hours of archive, cut down by Asif Kapadia with no present-day interviews on camera. His subject arrives in Naples in 1984 as the most expensive footballer in the world and leaves seven years later chased by the tax authorities and half the Italian press. The World Cup semi-final of 1990, played in his own club stadium against Italy, is the hinge. Three of three.
https://www.imdb.com/title/tt5433114/ - 11
Rising Phoenix (2020)
Nine Paralympians tell their own stories, and the film keeps going back to Ludwig Guttmann, the neurologist who put on an archery contest for spinal injury patients at Stoke Mandeville in 1948. Bebe Vio fences. Jean-Baptiste Alaize long jumps. The portraiture is deliberately grand, which is the argument. Two of three columns carried it.
https://www.imdb.com/title/tt10851618/ - 12
The Battered Bastards of Baseball (2014)
Bing Russell, a character actor best known as the deputy on Bonanza, bought a minor league club in Portland in 1973 and held open tryouts for anybody who turned up. No parent team, no scouts, a bat boy called Todd Field who grew up to direct films. Three columns of three, though one had it down at forty-five.
https://www.imdb.com/title/tt3445270/ - 13
Tokyo Olympiad (1965)
Kon Ichikawa was hired to make the official record of the 1964 Games and handed back something the organising committee disliked: long lenses on faces in the crowd, athletes losing, a marathon runner alone on an empty road. Only one of the three columns carried it.
https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0059817/ - 14
The Two Escobars (2010)
Pablo Escobar poured cocaine money into Colombian club football and the national team got very good very quickly. Andres Escobar scored an own goal against the United States in 1994 and was shot dead in a Medellin car park ten days later. Jeff and Michael Zimbalist braid the two lives into one story. One column of three had it.
