The Best Games of 2025
Eighteen games from 2025, ranked and open to your vote: award sweeps, sleeper hits, and at least one placement that will start an argument. What this measures is a blend: how much of it we actually finished, how much of it stayed with us afterwards, and how far it pushed the thing it was trying to do. Sales and Metacritic informed the order without deciding it, which is why the year's biggest seller sits at the bottom and the year's most decorated game sits at three. Remasters, remakes and platform ports are out, so Oblivion Remastered, Metal Gear Solid Delta and the Switch 2 editions of the Zelda games belong on a different list. Early access graduations count from their 1.0 date, which is how Hades II qualifies. Console exclusives are included and marked, since a list that only counted Steam releases would quietly skip some of the year's best work.

Hollow Knight: Silksong
Six and a half years after Team Cherry announced it as Hornet DLC, the thing arrived and broke Steam: over 535,000 concurrent players on launch day, 4 September 2025, roughly eight times the original's peak. The Crests are why it earns the top spot, because swapping the Reaper Crest for the Architect Crest stops Hornet healing and starts her crafting mid-fight. Same kingdom, different player.

Blue Prince
Eight years of solo work by Tonda Ros produced a mansion that redraws itself every morning, and a puzzle nobody can look up for you. Reaching Room 46 through the Antechamber before your fifty daily steps run out is the whole game, and failing costs you the entire floor plan. BAFTA gave it Game Design in April 2026. Second place will look insane until you play it.

Clair Obscur: Expedition 33
Yes, this won everything: nine awards at The Game Awards on 11 December 2025, the most in the ceremony's history, then Game of the Year at DICE and Best Game at BAFTA. Ranking it third is a provocation and you should vote it back up if you disagree. But the Pictos system, where mastering a passive over four battles frees it for the whole party, is the part people will still be copying in five years.

Hades II
Highest Metacritic score on this entire list, at 95, and it still only placed fourth, which tells you what kind of year 2025 was. Melinoë's six Nocturnal Arms carry the whole thing; the Argent Skull throws three skulls you then have to walk back into the fight to retrieve. Supergiant left early access on 25 September 2025 and took Best Action Game at The Game Awards.

ARC Raiders
Nexon reported 14 million copies in February 2026, fifteen weeks after Embark shipped it at $40 rather than free-to-play. What sells it is the tension of the extraction run: everything you carry is lost on death except the safe pocket. Stella Montis, the mountain facility the playerbase unlocked together in November, is the best map in any shooter this year. Best Multiplayer at The Game Awards.

Ghost of Yōtei
Sucker Punch swapped the stance system for a weapon counter system, so Atsu's katana, ōdachi, yari and kusarigama each break a specific enemy guard and you rotate through them mid-duel rather than holding a button. Sony has announced no PC version and reportedly scrapped the plan, so this one links Wikipedia: it is PlayStation 5 only. Adventure Game of the Year at DICE, 12 February 2026.

Donkey Kong Bananza
Nintendo built an average level out of more than 347 million voxels, then let you punch through all of them. Zebra Bananza turns DK into a sprinter who runs across hazards; Elephant Bananza lets him swallow terrain and spit it back. A Switch 2 exclusive, so no Steam page exists and the link goes to Wikipedia. 4.52 million sold to 31 March 2026, per Nintendo.

Kingdom Come: Deliverance II
Warhorse wrote 2.2 million words for this, which director Daniel Vávra believes is the longest script in games, and then made the combat hard enough that most players never see half of them. Master Strike is the gate: counter at the exact instant of an incoming blow, learned from Master Tomcat outside Semine, and Bohemia opens up. Five million copies in year one; BAFTA Narrative in 2026.

Eight episodes released weekly from 22 October 2025, which felt archaic and then felt clever once the wait between them became the point. Playing a washed-up mech pilot assigning the Z-Team to emergencies is a management sim wearing a comedy's clothes, and the roster of Invisigal, Flambae and Punch Up carries it. Four million copies by March 2026, and three BAFTAs including Jeffrey Wright's supporting performance.

Split Fiction
Hazelight's whole business is making you phone someone, and the Friend's Pass, where one purchase lets a second player download free with crossplay across four platforms, is why seven million copies moved by April 2026. Mio's cyberpunk and Zoe's fantasy keep colliding, and the Side Stories hide the best ideas in optional rooms most players skip. Josef Fares named both leads after his daughters.

A first-person game about being eight years old in Quito in 2001, while Ecuador qualified for a World Cup for the first time. There is one verb, the ball, and you use it in La Carolina Park until an adult calls you home. Julián Cordero spent about seven years on what began as a thesis project. Death Stranding 2: On the Beach
Kojima's sequel landed on PlayStation 5 on 26 June 2025 and only reached Steam on 19 March 2026, via Nixxes, which is why it sits here rather than higher, since half the audience met it a year late. The DHV Magellan, a ship that sails through tar between Mexico and Australia, replaces the first game's long walk with something closer to a commute. DICE gave it audio and technical.

Seven developers from Aggro Crab and Landfall made this in a one-month jam in Seoul for under $200,000, and it has since sold something like eleven million copies. Falling roughly 200 meters behind your friends summons the Scoutmaster, which is the funniest punishment design of the year. PEAK on SteamPEAK is a co-op climbing game where the slightest mistake can spell your doom. Baby Steps
Moving Nate means raising and lowering each foot by hand, which is either the best joke of the year or two hours you will never recover. Bennett Foddy, Gabe Cuzzillo and Maxi Boch also built a fully dynamic onesie soilage system, so the mud accumulates as evidence. Critics split down the middle, and IGN's 9 and Game Informer's 6 are describing the same walk. Five IGF nominations followed.

Absolum
Dotemu's first original property, made with the Streets of Rage 4 team, and the roguelite structure fits the beat 'em up better than it has any right to. Rituals are passive abilities you collect during a run and lose completely on death, which makes the last stretch of a good run genuinely tense. Mick Gordon and Yuka Kitamura guest on the score. Over 200,000 copies in week one.

BALL x PIT
Brick-breaker crossed with a survivors-like, plus a village you rebuild between runs, a combination that reads as nonsense and plays like nothing else. Ball Fusion merges two balls into one carrying both effects, and the moment you first chain four of them is when the hook sets. A million copies by December 2025, a Game Design nomination at BAFTA, and the Excelsior Award in New York.

One developer, working under the name vedinad, started in August 2024 and had 117,000 people playing simultaneously by 5 October 2025. The Silver Tome soaks up your meta-progression currency between runs and is the reason a joke about a 3D survivors-like kept people for forty hours. Then they withdrew their own Game Awards debut nomination, on the grounds that it was not their debut.

Mario Kart World
Best-selling game on this list by a distance, at 14.03 million to 31 December 2025, and last place, which should tell you how the ranking works. Knockout Tour, a 24-racer elimination sprint across the open world, is the genuinely new idea; the driving between courses is mostly filler.
