The Best Open-World Games Ever
Ranked by the world itself, not the story bolted onto it, and Breath of the Wild sits at three, which is the whole argument. Vote it into a shape you can defend. A world qualifies here if you can cross its outdoors without a loading screen and without asking a menu for permission. Interiors may load; a game that flies you out to one of two separate maps from a deploy screen is running missions instead. Survival sandboxes are in, because a generated world you traverse is still a world, while hub games and immersive sims are out: Dishonored and Deus Ex are brilliant and they are levels. One seat per series, so a studio that shipped five near-identical maps gets a single entry. Elden Ring went to the Soulslikes list and The Witcher 3 to the 2010s RPGs, which is why two obvious names are absent rather than forgotten, and the story-first crowd lives on Story-Driven Games.

Put a hole in the ground and the whole thing opens up. Mojang Studios shipped the full version on 18 November 2011, and Wikipedia's tally had it past 400 million copies sold as of May 2026. Best moment is still the first obsidian Nether portal: you build a frame, strike a light, and a lava dimension opens under a world you thought you knew. Not sold on Steam, since Microsoft keeps it a storefront exclusive, so the link is Wikipedia.

Red Dead Redemption 2
Rockstar's horse simulator with a western attached reached consoles on 26 October 2018, PC through Rockstar's own launcher in November 2019, and Steam that December. Dead Eye, where time slows and you paint targets before letting go, is the flashy part. What stayed with me was riding back to camp in silence because the honor meter had ticked down over something small.

Climbing drains a stamina wheel, which turns every cliff into a budget question, and the paraglider makes each hilltop a decision about where the next four minutes go.

Cyberpunk 2077
Night City is the best vertical city anyone has built, and it took years of patching before people would say so out loud. CD Projekt Red released it on 10 December 2020. Braindance is the system nobody has copied: you replay somebody else's recorded experience and pick it apart for the one detail that unlocks the next job. Pacifica, half-finished and gang-run, is where the place finally lands.

The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind
Bethesda Game Studios dropped you onto Vvardenfell on 1 May 2002 with no marker and a quest journal Wikipedia calls almost universally reviled, hundreds of unsorted pages you reread to learn the shack is north of the bridge. Skyrim is right there on Steam and more famous, but a series gets one seat and I gave it to the game that makes you read the landscape. Steam sells the Game of the Year Edition, listed 16 June 2009.

Sucker Punch threw out waypoints, and art director Jason Connell said at the Paris Game Week reveal that exploration would run on curiosity instead. In their place sits a guiding wind you summon with a swipe, so you navigate by weather. Nixxes Software built the PC version, out 16 May 2024, four years after the PlayStation 4 original of 17 July 2020. Steam lists it as the Director's Cut.

Grand Theft Auto V
Rockstar North's Los Santos hit PC on 14 April 2015, eighteen months after the console version, and Steam now lists that build as Grand Theft Auto V Legacy beside a separate Enhanced product. This entry links the 2015 one on purpose. First Person Mode was the PC version's addition, and dropping into the driver's seat of a stolen hatchback turned a satirical map into somewhere I could smell.

Unknown Worlds took it out of early access on 23 January 2018, and Wikipedia's development section says the team set out to make a non-violent game without lethal guns after the Sandy Hook shooting. That choice is why the ocean works: with nothing to shoot, depth becomes the enemy. Climb into the PRAWN Suit, sink past the safe shallows into a black trench, and your oxygen counter does more than any boss.

What makes the Mojave a world rather than a big field is faction reputation: help one side and another starts hunting you, so the map reshapes around a decision you made forty hours ago. V.A.T.S. pausing time so you can cripple a leg is the joke that keeps all that walking bearable.

Terraria
Dig down far enough and two dimensions stop feeling like a limitation. Re-Logic released it on 16 May 2011 with 505 Games publishing, and Wikipedia put sales past 70 million copies by May 2026. There is no loading screen between the surface and the lava at the bottom. Beating the Wall of Flesh tips the whole save into hardmode, reseeding a world you had learned so you have to learn it again.

Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag
Ubisoft Montreal shipped it to consoles on 29 October 2013 and to PC three weeks later, and it takes the single seat I allow a series that later printed near-identical maps for a decade. Sailing the Jackdaw out of a squall, boarding a passing brig and pressing its crew is a loop I ran for sixty hours while ignoring the assassin plot. Wikipedia notes the ship upgrades throughout.

Warhorse Studios put medieval Bohemia out on 13 February 2018, with Deep Silver publishing. Its fighting runs on a physics system using inverse kinematics, where the speed and weight of a blow decides what happens to both bodies, which is why your first five duels are humiliating and your fiftieth feels earned. A world with no dragons is plenty strange once you are lost after dark.

No Man's Sky
Hello Games launched to mixed reviews in August 2016, with the Steam listing dated 12 August, and Wikipedia now describes the recovery as one of the industry's great redemption stories. Over eighteen quintillion procedurally generated planets is a figure too big to mean anything. What means something is dropping from deep space to a planet's surface with no loading screen, which still reads as a magic trick.

Playground Games and Xbox Game Studios put Mexico out on 9 November 2021, with premium buyers let in four days early, and the store page promises deserts, jungles, hidden ruins and a towering snow-capped volcano. Driving is the only verb, which is exactly why it belongs: this map was built to be crossed, never cleared. EventLab lets players assemble their own races and modes on top of it.
