The Best Horror Games Ever Made
Seventeen horror games ranked by how well the fear holds up the second time through, so vote the order around if your nerves disagree. Dread built into a game's systems, meaning resource maths, sightlines and a monster with a schedule, outranks a jump scare that can get you once. Action-horror qualifies, which is why Resident Evil 4 is here: being outnumbered is a horror mechanic. Multiplayer horror qualifies too but ranks lower, because fear your friends generate is not fear a designer built. Resident Evil had six eligible entries and is capped at three so the rest of the genre can breathe. Remakes and remasters belong to a sibling list, so every game here links its original release. Alien: Isolation is missing on purpose, since it went to the movie-games list. Two entries from the nineties, four from the 2000s, six from the 2010s and five from the 2020s.

Silent Hill 2
Team Silent made it inside Konami Computer Entertainment Tokyo and Konami published it for PlayStation 2 in 2001; Creature Labs ported it to Windows as a boxed release in December 2002. That version is not sold on Steam, and nobody could certify why, so I am not inventing a reason. Pyramid Head is guilt you can walk behind, and his blade scraping stone still ruins me. The 2024 remake is on the remakes list.

Resident Evil 4 (2005)
Capcom developed and published the 2005 GameCube original, and the Steam page here is the Ultimate HD Edition that reached Windows on 27 February 2014, a separate product from the 2023 remake on the remakes list. Horror by arithmetic: the opening village fight hands you a handgun, a crowd and a chainsaw closing in, and you learn that panic is a resource you spend.

Resident Evil 7 Biohazard
Released 24 January 2017 by Capcom, who pitched the switch to what the store page calls the Isolated View - first person, no camera to hide behind. Jack Baker chasing you through his own garage is the moment the series stopped being about zombies and started being about a family who will not leave. Grim, funny, and much smaller than it looks.

Dead Space (2008)
EA Redwood Shores built it, Electronic Arts published it, and you play Isaac Clarke, an engineer stranded on the spacecraft USG Ishimura. Strategic dismemberment is the whole idea - shoot a Necromorph in the head and it keeps coming, so you learn to aim at limbs. Health lives on Isaac's spine, so nothing ever pauses. The 2023 remake is elsewhere.

SIGNALIS
German studio rose-engine released this on 27 October 2022, published by Humble Games and Playism, though Steam's publisher field now reads Balor Games. You are Elster, a Replika technician digging through an off-world facility, and it plays like a lost PlayStation disc someone found in a bunker. Tuning the handheld radio to the right frequency is half the puzzle design and all of the atmosphere.

Amnesia: The Dark Descent
Frictional Games self-published this on 8 September 2010 and effectively invented the modern hide-and-run horror game. Sanity drains while you stand in darkness and drains faster if you look straight at a monster, so the game punishes both cowardice and curiosity. Standing in a black corridor listening to your own character fall apart is worse than anything with teeth.

SOMA
Frictional Games followed Amnesia with this on 22 September 2015, moving the horror below the waves of the Atlantic. Brain scans are the real monster: every transfer makes a copy, the original stays where it is, and the game makes you press the button anyway. Best script in horror games, and the ending argument is still going in my group chat.

Resident Evil 2 (1998)
Capcom sells the 1998 game as its own Steam product, distinct from the 2019 remake that lives on the remakes list, and it still splits into Leon Kennedy's rookie shift and Claire Redfield's search for her brother. Fixed cameras were a budget limit turned into a weapon. A Licker unfolding along the police station ceiling is why I stopped running down hallways.

Acid Wizard Studio shipped this on 17 August 2017, with Hooded Horse now co-publishing, and it is top-down, which should make it less frightening and does the opposite. Your character sees in a cone, so most of the screen is black until you turn. Days are for scavenging; nights are for nailing boards over windows and waiting.

Mouthwashing
Wrong Organ made it, CRITICAL REFLEX published it on 26 September 2024, and the premise is five crew stranded on a freighter called the Tulpar. Its structure is the trick: the story jumps either side of the crash until you understand what you have been complicit in. Short, no combat, and it left me sitting in the menu afterwards.

F.E.A.R.
Monolith Productions released this shooter in 2005, and the Steam package bundles the Extraction Point and Perseus Mandate expansions alongside it. Reflex time slows the world while you keep aiming at normal speed, which turns firefights into slow-motion sculpture. Then Alma appears in a corridor for half a second and the shooter stops being a shooter. Best gunplay on the list.

Outlast
Red Barrels put this out on 4 September 2013 and gave journalist Miles Upshur no weapon at all inside Mount Massive Asylum. Everything routes through the camcorder: night vision is the way to see in the dark, and it eats batteries, so being able to see is a resource that runs out. Cheap in places. Effective anyway, and I flinched constantly.

Kinetic Games, a British studio, put this four-player online co-op into early access on 18 September 2020, and it is the best argument that horror can be a job. Ghosts respond to voice, so saying a name into the spirit box is both an evidence tool and the single worst decision available. Ranks here rather than higher because the fear comes from your friends, not from the design.

SILENT HILL f
Developed by NeoBards Entertainment and published by Konami Digital Entertainment on 25 September 2025, this is a mainline entry set in Hinako's fog-swallowed hometown. Too new for me to claim it ages well, and it is ranked accordingly. The fog and the grotesque monsters inside it are doing the series' oldest trick with a new studio's hands, which is a nervy thing to attempt.

Little Nightmares
Tarsier Studios made it and Bandai Namco published it in April 2017, casting you as Six, a small child in a raincoat inside a vessel called the Maw. Scale does the scaring. The Janitor's arms are longer than corridors and he hunts by sound, so crawling under a table while those hands sweep past is the whole game in one beat.

Zeekerss developed and published it on 23 October 2023 and it is still tagged Early Access on Steam, which has not slowed it down. Meeting the Company's scrap quota is the entire pressure system: one more room, one more haul, then something takes your friend and you hear it happen over proximity chat. Comedy and terror using the same button.

Alone in the Dark (1992)
Frédérick Raynal designed this for Infogrames in 1992 on MS-DOS, dropping roughly 250-polygon characters onto pre-rendered backdrops. Fixed camera angles started as a technical necessity and became the grammar every survival horror since has borrowed. Playing as Edward Carnby or Emily Hartwood in that haunted mansion is clunky now. It is here for what it started, and the 2024 reboot is a different product.
